I've been talking about this, in-game, with Delvus a lot recently.
Almost every other skill can be raised in the safety of your house and you can go AFK and not worry. The safest place a crafter can mine or lumberjack though is inside guarded protection, and therefore they cannot go AFK without spamming .guards in their macro. Crafters are also the most vulnerable to attack too: why should they have such a tough time raising their skills?
The best alternative, that I can think of, is to maybe make safezones again. I can't really think of an alternative at the moment.

#1 - Letting us use Yuccas or fruit trees.
#2 - 1 mine that is accessed only by leveled crafters? and this mine shall not give any special ore.

I agree 100% with lorth about a mine that allows only leveled crafters inside. Also, make that mine also a safe zone so people can't make a spec 1 crafter and then go in a kill everyone.
Eliminate all the funny business and just make a spec crafter mine.
Also we really need some fruit trees.
