For the time being I'm going to stop the creation of new player towns.
We have a good number of players online, but you guys are always spread all across the map and don't really interact with one another as much as you could. I think it makes both newbies and veterans lose interest over time if they don't bump into other players much.

Unlocking this topic for discussion cos I got a message from Fayt about it, with some valid points:
I'll reply asap.

Maybe we/you should start implementing things to 'lessen' the map. Cutting off certain moongates, and possibly even knocking some towns down.
Just wanted to create this topic because i do agree with the announcement of stopping new towns.
My 2 cents

Ummm..
Other then actually fighting each other, what is the point in interacting with anyone?
People can go out and get GM items pretty easily, so if you can go out and get a full suit of whatever (better then Crafter gear), why bother with interacting with other players?
Want player interaction? - Get rid of Player Vendors (isnt that obvious?)
Want player interaction? - Get rid of "exit" portals out of dungeons. The devious Player killer will wait outside a dungeon entrance for people leaving AFTER others are done hunting.
- Tone down the "awesome" items. Make the monsters that give great items only spawn in 1 or 2 spots.. so it forces people to go to those same spots for the "awesome" items.
Where people live isn't and shouldn't be an issue, where they go to hang out should be.

If you don't want things so spread out, you should invest in making a custom map instead of using the original map.. I've played on quite a few small custom worlds with no mounts and it seemed to work out.
Disabling custom towns is a huge let down, we were about to build our town been working hard to collect all the money and now we just did that for nothing?

I think the bottom line is the population of this server just isn't high enough to make your vision come true. Most people are only macroing all day, and the few that aren't, well there's not a whole lot for them to do.
On a side note, this was great timing, me and friend planned on buying the stuff for our own town today and well there goes that idea. The one thing we were really looking forward to doing and had been macroing to get the gold for is now gone. Probably not hard to figure out where we go from here, good luck.

I think you should just do an item wipe.
Start the 2nd age and make a healthy sized ".startpack [class]" for fist age chars.
120k gold, full spellbook, bag of reags, one of each crafter kit (maybe crafters could select ore or logs and get 500 of the first 5 resource, weaps of vanq, bandages, shields, arrows, noobed thief gloves, (something for bards) etc..
This way it's a pain in the arse but not a total run-round-like-a-noob-with-nothing-again pain in the arse.
A wipe needs to be done because the shard is too quiet. As a starting char who doesn't know anybody I'm finding it hard to do anything but macro. I've seen 2 non-afk people in minoc (one of them killed and looted me in 1 hit) and spoken to 4-5 on .chat, other than that i've not seen anybody.
I know people are going to say "you're not in the right places" or "you should join a faction" but I'm just giving you the opinion and perspective of a new player on the shard. It's very difficult to get into the swing of things when you're running round a pretty much empty shard.
The gauntlet was quite a good idea on the last zh. Lets people know there's something happening at a certain place at a certain time. Maybe some sort of automated pk and non-pk GY raids with announcements "Dark forces are massing at Yew Cemetery" which could be running randomly all day. Get everybody to the same place at the same time.
Finally, Prom, if you do decide to do an item wipe then get everything sorted and ready and THEN announce it and give a 2-3 day warning. Ultimate shard killer is when an item wipe takes 2 months to come and everybody gets bored of waiting and people stop playing because there's no point.

Maybe we/you should start implementing things to 'lessen' the map. Cutting off certain moongates, and possibly even knocking some towns down. Just wanted to create this topic because i do agree with the announcement of stopping new towns. Actually I've removed all the vendors in Yew, Vesper and Cove already. Cove because it was a player town but noone's there anymore, and Yew & Vesper to concentrate activity in Minoc and the player towns. Yew & Vesper were populated with vendors at the start of the shard, but now there's lots of vendors in the player towns which renders them irrelevant. Other then actually fighting each other, what is the point in interacting with anyone? People can go out and get GM items pretty easily, so if you can go out and get a full suit of whatever (better then Crafter gear), why bother with interacting with other players? Want player interaction? - Get rid of Player Vendors (isnt that obvious?) Want player interaction? - Get rid of "exit" portals out of dungeons. Where people live isn't and shouldn't be an issue, where they go to hang out should be. The droprate of GM items is being lowered a lot at the moment, as you say - it's too easy to find that stuff. I don't think removing player vendors will make a huge difference, the likes of which we're looking to achieve. Removing the telepads in dungeons will make everyone leave, lol, and players still have to run to dungeons to get there. Reducing the number of spots where the highest level mobs exist is a good idea, I think we'll follow through on that. I haven't ever tried to make my own map, but it might be an idea. We're not disabling towns forever, just until the shard gets more players online. At the moment we average around 40-50 players online on 30-40 unique IPs. That needs to be at least 70-75 players online imho. I think you're overreacting. This is only a temporary freeze on the starting of new player towns, once the server population grows a bit more I'll reinstate it.

What you outlined is exactly why newbies don't stay and veterans get bored. I sympathise with some of the players in this thread who have saved up and want to start their own player town, but unless they take one for the team we're going to remain at around an average of 50 players online and that might even drop off eventually too.

You could make a noobie dungeon which is a bit more usefull then the old one to help new characters: - No loot and no-pk, just for skill training. Or maybe just gold. Possibly limit the loot to power weaps even though the monsters would give better loot outside. Just so people can train.
- You need to be naked to enter and there is a starting room with an armoury in it. The "training armour" and "training [weapon name]" can be worn by any character with stats < 90 and is reasonable quality. The teleporter out of the dungeon destroys everything from the dungeon including the reag and arrow bags.
- have a stat requirement like < 90 to enter.
- There could be different dungeons for different classes geared towards their specific strengths and weaknesses. Or maybe just one big dungeon so people meet each other more and help out.
I'm just thinking that maybe something to help boost up newcomers would help get things going a bit. If they can join and be hunting right away they may stay interested a bit easier. Although, maybe it would just be better to kick them into the real world and let them get on with it lol.

Theres some good ideas being thrown around. All I have to say is by doing this its always a step in a positive direction! All I have to say to try to make a positive player towns is having an incentive to join a player town-other then what us veterans hand out to these players. Also I'm pretty gay when it comes to aestetics* I like my town to look cooler then other peoples... Kind of how Doseth looks... Too bad its so far off no one can appreciate it.

I like Valasca's idea about the newbie dungeon. Would be alot more fun for new players to be able to run right in and start hunting. It's alot more fun to raise your skills that way too.
Anyone got ideas for what would make people join a player town? We are trying to build up Magincia the best way possible, with all the vendors needed for everything and everyone. Think we got 40+ vendors. I don't see any real advantage, for people, to join as a citizen thou.
